This article describes what you need to do when you move house and leave a Nest thermostat behind. At the end, it also looks at how you can take advantage of an existing Nest installed into a home into which you are moving.

While we talk here of a single Nest thermostat, it's exactly the same if there are multiple Nests in the same property

Leaving behind a Nest thermostat when you move house

There are basically three things you need to do:

  1. Set the thermostat back to default settings. This will erase all your personal data. It will also provide a simple starting point for the people moving into your old home to set up the Nest thermostat in the way they want.
  2. Remove the device from your Nest application. This will enable the new owners to take control of the device themselves.
  3. If you have a service contract with us, inform us as soon as possible about your move. We can arrange for a transfer of the service agreement if the new owners agree.

You can find details of how to reset the Nest thermostat and the Nest application on the Nest support website at

Moving into a house with an existing Nest thermostat

You need to check that your vendors have deleted the thermostat from their Nest app so that they are no longer controlling it. It is very important to do this. You don't want to arrive in the property and find that you cannot take full control of the thermostat - though, unless the previous owners have locked the thermostat, you will still be able to alter it manually.

If there is a problem with this, then you will have to call the Nest support line 0808 169 2307 and they will help you sort it out.

It will also be useful to download the Nest application to your phone(s) before you move so that you are ready to take control of the thermostat as quickly as possible.

Controlling the thermostat itself is easy and intuitive once you have got the hang of pressing the bottom of its screen to go into settings and to click on an action and also of turning the outside to select the action you want.

If you are buying your home from people who have a support contract with Homesmart Solutions, this will normally carry on to the end of their 12 month contract.  You should check this with them. In this case, you can also call us to let us know that you now live in the property.
